Welcome to Charles Spurgeon's Ethernet Web Site
This site provides extensive information about Ethernet (IEEE
802.3) local area network (LAN) technology. This includes the original
10 Megabit per second (Mbps) system, 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet (802.3u),
1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet (802.3z/802.3ab), and 10 Gigabit Ethernet
(802.3ae). |

Charles Spurgeon's
latest book on Ethernet is published by O'Reilly and Associates, and
features an octopus on the cover. This O'Reilly definitive guide
provides a comprehensive and accurate source of information on the
entire Ethernet system in a single volume. Includes 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps,
and Gigabit Ethernet, as well as repeaters, switching hubs,
full-duplex Ethernet, Auto-Negotiation system, specifications for all
media systems, structured cabling systems for twisted-pair cabling,
network management, troubleshooting, and more. Sample Chapter 13: Multi-Segment
Configuration Guidelines, is available online!

The Quick Reference Guides
| |
The Quick Reference Guides contain the official half-duplex mode
configuration rules for the 10 and 100 Mbps Ethernet media types, as
published in the IEEE 802.3 standard. Half-duplex mode Ethernet is
another name for the original Ethernet mode of operation which uses
the CSMA/CD media access protocol and repeater hubs. Full-duplex
Ethernet is based on switching hubs and does not use CSMA/CD,
therefore full-duplex Ethernet links do not depend on the round trip
signal timing guidelines described in these configuration guides.
Included in the Quick Reference Guides are the configuration rules for
combining the 10 and 100 Mbps Ethernet media types. This makes it
possible for you to verify the configuration of any half-duplex mode
Ethernet system, to make sure that it meets the official half-duplex
timing guidelines and that it will operate correctly. The
on-line Quick Reference Guides provided here contain over 150 pages of
concise technical information, including more than 60 figures and
tables. Taken all together, the Quick Reference Guides provide a
complete configuration manual for 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps half-duplex
Ethernet, available for free on the Web!
